Get to know the companies and entrepreneurs changing the Tennessee landscape — designing innovative solutions, creating jobs, and building communities. This week, we chatted with SOMAVAC CEO Esra Roan.

CEO Esra Roan, PhD, and CTO Josh Herwig (Jim Weber/Daily Memphian)

Give us your elevator pitch.
SOMAVAC creates solutions that improve the post-op recovery experience and reduce healthcare costs. SOMAVAC’s flagship system, SOMAVAC® 100, is a powered, compact continuous suction device with a disposable reservoir delivering robust suction to effectively remove and dispose fluids after major surgeries like mastectomies and hernia repairs.

Briefly, what inspired you to start your company?
First, Josh and I were presented with the problem of fluid accumulation (seroma) after surgery. We quickly realized the size of the clinical problem and the impact it currently has in our healthcare system. However, when we met women and their loved ones who experienced drains within the context of their breast cancer journey, Josh and I realized that there was an even deeper, emotional issue. This motivated us to do more for patients, and their loved ones, who are together recovering from surgery at home or wherever they may be.

What’s your secret sauce?
The work ethic of our team and dedication to solving a problem that impacts patients directly.

If your company had a theme song, what would it be?
